ask me some time about getting it almost right the first time, then finding that in some small way it doesn’t do what we want so we try random wild things never intended in the first scope in a beleaguered struggle
to ever again get as close to right as it was the first time

Trying to do it right the first time in my experience almost always means spending a lot of time and still getting it wrong, either because getting it right is hard, but even if you are good, what is “right” has probably shifted in the time it takes to do the project. I’m a big fan of iteration , though obviously it works better for writing software than say civil engineering.

I work in an iterative field related to modeling and databases. If something is right the first time, we probably don’t need you because it’s obviously simple and can be automated.
I started calling this “
The irony of
quality.”
